When behaviour needs a deeper plan

You Didn't Rescue a Problem. You Rescued a Dog Who Doesn't Know They're Safe Yet.

Bringing a rescue dog home is one of the most rewarding things you can do. But nobody tells you about the weeks — sometimes months — that follow. The unpredictable reactions. The anxiety you can't quite explain. The feeling that no matter how much love you pour in, something isn't quite connecting.

That's not a training failure. That's a dog who hasn't yet learned how to communicate with you — and doesn't yet trust that the world is safe.

The Fresh Start Programme exists for exactly this.

This Isn't Generic Dog Training.

Most training programmes are built around a "normal" dog with a known history. Sit. Stay. Recall. Clean slate.

Your rescue dog doesn't have a clean slate. They arrived with one.

The Fresh Start Programme is built differently:

It starts before commands — with decompression, safety, and the language your dog needs to feel secure

It's grounded in Communicative Learning Theory (CLT) — a framework that treats communication as the foundation of all behaviour change, not a side effect of it

It accounts for unknown history, trauma responses, shutdown behaviour, and the slow trust-build that rescue dogs genuinely need

It doesn't rush results. It builds a relationship that produces them

What The Programme Covers

Phase 1 — Decompression & Safety

We don't begin by asking your dog to perform. We begin by helping them exhale. Understanding the decompression window, reducing environmental pressure, and building the first threads of trust.

Phase 2 — Communication Foundations

Using CLT principles, we establish a shared language between you and your dog — one they can respond to without fear or confusion. Body language reading, calming signals, and emotional regulation come before any formal cues.

Phase 3 — Building Confidence

Your rescue dog will face things they've never encountered — or things they've encountered in the wrong way. We use structured exposure and positive association to help them meet the world without shutting down or reacting.

Phase 4 — Everyday Life Skills

Loose lead walking, calm greetings, recall, settling at home — all taught through a lens that understands where your dog has come from, not just where you want them to go.

“Behaviour doesn’t change because we push harder. It changes when dogs feel understood and safe enough to learn.”
