Every Dog Deserves to Be Understood

That's not a tagline. It's the reason James & Frankie exists — and it's the principle that drives everything we do as a science-based, compassion-first dog training and behaviour business based in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.

Whether you're a dog owner struggling with behaviour problems, a rescue centre supporting dogs into new homes, or an aspiring professional dog trainer looking to build a meaningful career — our mission speaks directly to you.

How James & Frankie Began

James & Frankie was founded on a simple but powerful truth: most dogs aren't badly behaved — they're misunderstood.

The dogs that end up in rescue shelters, the puppies developing anxiety in new homes, the reactive dogs that owners feel they've failed — at the root of almost all of it is a breakdown in communication between dogs and the people in their lives.

Frankie — the Rottweiler this business is named after — showed our founder James exactly that. Their relationship didn't just inspire a passion for dog training. It proved beyond doubt that when you stop trying to control a dog and start trying to communicate with one, behaviour changes, bonds deepen, and dogs thrive.

That experience became the foundation for Communicative Learning Theory (CLT) — a science-based framework that places communication, not correction, at the heart of how dogs learn. And CLT became James & Frankie.

What We Stand For

We are a Birmingham-based dog training and behaviour business with a mission that goes far beyond teaching dogs to sit or walk to heel.

We believe dogs are not problems to be managed. They are sentient, feeling animals with the capacity to learn, bond, and live fulfilling lives — when given the right relationship, the right environment, and the right support.

We believe science and compassion belong together. The most effective dog training isn't just about results — it's about how those results are achieved. Our approach is rooted in canine behavioural science, delivered with genuine care for the dog's emotional wellbeing.

We believe a dog's journey doesn't end at adoption. One of the biggest gaps in dog welfare today is aftercare. Thousands of rescue dogs across the UK leave shelters into new homes with no structured support. Puppies are brought home with no real guidance on what communication-based learning actually looks like in practice. Adult dogs carry behavioural trauma that nobody ever helped them work through. James & Frankie exists to close that gap.

We believe the people around dogs matter just as much as the dogs themselves. When dog owners truly understand their dog's behaviour and communication signals, they become better companions. When dog trainers are equipped with evidence-based knowledge and ethical practice, they make a better profession. That ripple effect is how lasting change happens — for dogs, for owners, and for the wider dog training industry.

Who We Serve

Dog Owners in Birmingham and Beyond

From first-time puppy owners in Sutton Coldfield to families dealing with reactivity, anxiety, or complex behavioural challenges — we provide dog training and behaviour support that works, because it's built on understanding rather than obedience.

Our services include 1-to-1 behaviour consultations, group puppy classes, online dog training programmes, and a growing library of digital resources — all underpinned by Communicative Learning Theory.

Rescue Dogs and the People Who Rehome Them

Rescue centres do vital work — but the support dogs receive after leaving those centres is often inconsistent or absent entirely. James & Frankie works to change that by providing dog behaviour education for new adopters, rehoming organisations, and anyone navigating life with a dog that has a complex history.

Bringing a rescue dog home is the beginning of the journey, not the end of it. We're here to support every step.

Aspiring and Professional Dog Trainers

Our certified dog trainer programme is designed for people who want to build a career in dog training the right way — grounded in canine science, behavioural theory, animal welfare legislation, and professional ethics.

If you want to become a dog trainer who truly understands dogs, rather than one who simply manages them, our CLT-based certification gives you the knowledge and framework to do exactly that.

Our Commitment Beyond Training

James & Frankie's mission extends beyond the dogs we work with directly.

We are committed to using the platform and revenue this business generates to actively support dogs who have no voice and no advocate. That means donating to dog welfare charities working both here in the UK and in parts of the world where dogs face cruelty and suffering that most people never see.

Because if we genuinely believe that every dog deserves to be understood — then that has to mean every dog. Not just the ones in our training classes. Not just the ones in our community. Every single one.

More Than a Dog Training Business

James & Frankie is a dog training and behaviour business based in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. But it's also a statement of intent — that the way humans relate to dogs needs to evolve.

That understanding should come before obedience. That communication should come before commands. That a dog's emotional wellbeing is as important as their behaviour.

We're building something that goes beyond what a traditional dog trainer offers. We're building a movement — rooted in science, driven by compassion, and committed to giving every dog the life they deserve.

That's our mission. And we're only just getting started.

“Real training isn’t about controlling a dog. It’s about helping them feel confident enough to look to you for guidance.”
